Memorial Day has been observed by citizens of the United States since 1868. This official national holiday is celebrated on the last Monday during the month of May and is set aside to honor military members who have died in service to the country. Recognition was originally focused on Civil War soldiers but after World War II, the celebration was expanded to honor all fallen soldiers.
Many people don’t know the true meaning of Memorial Day anymore. It seems a shame, because the day was set aside as a tribute to those who gave their lives protecting our country. When the day comes around every year on the last Monday of May, a lot of people think it is time for the picnic, swimming at the beach and a day at the park. All of this is good but many people in the military community are asking the American people to take a moment out of their day and remember those heroes that sacrificed their all.
